I want to wish all of you out there in blogger land a very happy New Year and hope the new year will bring you nothing but happiness and joy.
It sure is a noisy night here near Cut & Shoot, TX. There is only two times a year that it is legal to sell (and buy) fireworks, one is the fourth of July and the other is for New Years. Yep, it sounds like a battle is going on around my place. Guess there is no use trying to go to bed at a decent hour tonight.
Don't forget now, I want you to have a great year, you hear?

Can't Remember
Have you ever laid awake at night trying to get to sleep and all these absolutely great ideas of what you could post to make a very interesting blog are going through your head? And then you wake up in the morning and. . . . nothing. Couldn't remember a dang thing. Yep, that was me and last night I had a great blog idea but, puff, it was gone this morning. So, I don't have a thing to write. Have a great day, you hear?

What A Beautiful Sky
This morning I went out to open my gate so the gas man can deliver some propane. I couldn't help but notice how beautiful the sky was. I hurried back to the house and got my camera. Yep, you guessed it, I am going to post a few sky pictures.
Yep, it is a beautiful morning here at Swamp Crest.
Remember that old TV show, Falcon Crest? Well, that is where I got the idea to call my place Swamp Crest. Don't you think that would make a wonderful title for a TV show? Of course, our property really has a large swamp in the middle of it along with two ponds, but we don't have any falcons that I know of. I am sure some may have flown over and maybe even visited for awhile, but of course, I can't verify that. If your day is anywhere close to as nice as the one I am having, you better get out and enjoy it, you hear?

Got Gas?
Got gas? Well, I need some. OK, let me explain. We heat our home with an electric furnace, but my wife prefers to cook with gas. So, we have a 250 gallon propane tank which lasts us quite a long time but it is time to get it filled up.
That is usually not a problem but it has been pretty wet around here and the heavy propane truck driver should be very careful where he goes. I wouldn't advise getting off the driveway, but he may have to. That would depend on how long the hose or hoses are that he carries on his truck. I will insist that he gets out of his truck and checks it out. I will also tell him if he thinks it will be a problem, we could wait till it dries up a bit, but this time of year, that may be too long. Now, you all have a great day, you hear?

Why Did I Say That??
Have you ever heard of that disease that cattle get called hoof and mouth disease? Well, sometimes I suffer from foot in mouth disease. That is caused by talking without thinking. Maybe I should give you some examples.
1. When someone says "I have been on a diet for months, so how do I look?" Your comment is "Oh, you have been on a diet?" Time to extract foot from mouth.
2. When your wife comes home from shopping and asks how you like her new dress. You shouldn't say "You bought THAT?". Quick now, take that dang foot out of your mouth and gargle.
3. When you meet an old high school buddy and he looks a hundred years old. You shouldn't say "Wow buddy, you look awful. You sure must have had a rough life?". Extract one foot from one mouth.
4. When you see a drawing and say "It is so bad, I can't figure out what it is." And then you find out your kid, or your grandkid, or your great grandkid did it just for you. Oh my, that foot stuck in your mouth really hurts and you try hard to remove it.
That is enough examples. I am sure you all know what I am trying to say and I am also sure that you have stuck your foot in your mouth more than once. This is a disease, Foot in Mouth Disease, that I keep getting over and over again, but it does make my life more interesting for sure. Now, keep your foot out of your mouth and have a great day, you hear?

What Is Silence?
Silence, in this case, is defined as a complete absence of sound. How many of you have experienced complete absence of sound? I have never experienced complete silence. Let me explain.
Many, many years ago when I was a young boy, I was laying in my bed sleeping. I woke up in the middle of the night and just laid there for a few seconds listing to all the night critters (crickets, katydids, etc.) sing their beautiful songs. That is, until I realized it was in the middle of winter with over a foot of snow on the ground. It should be completely silent, but it wasn't. Yep, the sound was coming from my own ears.
Earlier in my life, I had suffered a lot of ear infections during which caused my eardrums to brake or, if caught in time, lanced. That had left me with a constant sound, which I have to this day. The sound seems to get louder if I am not feeling well, but last night and so far today, the ringing in my ears is quite loud. I do not feel sick, so maybe this will be my "normal" from now on.
I suppose that it inhibits my hearing to some extent, especially sounds that are of the same or near the same frequency. I used to wear hearing aids, which did seem to help some, but they wore out and I have never replaced them. This morning the ringing seems quite loud, but maybe that is because I have been thinking about it and writing about it here on my blog. Now, I would appreciate it if you all would stop ringing all those bells and just have a great day, you hear?

Big Cat Spotted Again
Yesterday, we took some stuff down to the flea market to give to a friend to sell. That way, the friend may be able to make a little bit more money than without it. We didn't stay to walk around and came back home while it was still early morning. On the way back, my wife spotted that big cat again in a small opening in the trees along the north side of the road about two miles from our place.
You remember my blog postings telling how we heard it yelling at night and my son got some good pictures of it on his game cameras that he has set up around our place. I am glad it is still around, adds some spice to our lives. Did you know that they can have a large territory? Yep, depending on their food availability, they can have a territory that covers anywhere from 25 to 785 square miles. Dang, that is large spread from minimum to maximum. I would imagine that in this area, they would only roam close to the minimum area. There is a lot of food for them when you consider all the pets and livestock people have around here. My son has plenty of small livestock to keep them well fed (grin). Of course, he really doesn't want to use them as feed for the big cat.
I have never seen one in the wild, and envy my wife sighting it yesterday. Of course I wouldn't mind at all if it decided to move on. But once one has been here, you just never know when it or another one will come back. A little excitement in our lives is a welcome thing. . . well, it is for me, my wife, not so much. Now stay away from the big kitties and have a great day, you hear?

Met Blogger Friends
We who participate in the blogger world love to meet other bloggers face to face. I have met quite a few of them over the years. Some of them have passed away and some have just moved far away. I have never forgotten any of them.
But, it is so very nice to meet with bloggers who are very much alive and enjoying both their blogging world and their RV life style. What a wonderful surprise it was to find out that a blogging, RVing couple had stopped fairly close to me at an RV park. Therefore, we just had to take a short trip to meet up with them in person.
This wonderful couple were from Canada and since they were stopped for a few days close to us, we just had to go see them, which we did. Both my wife and I had a wonderful time flapping our jaws with them and I must admit that I out flapped my wife for sure. It is so very special to finally meet with a couple who we have followed on Blogger. Here is a picture that I took of George and Suzie with their RV behind them.
George showed me how to set my camera on delay, and we all got into my next shot.
Hated to see the visit come to an end, but we headed home with smiles on our faces. If any of you ever get a chance to meet with them, I highly recommend that you do. Have safe travels, George and Suzie, and hope to see you again in the future. Thanks for the wonderful day and I want all of you have a great day, you hear?

Never Know What You Will Find
I always try to be aware of my surroundings at all time. No, not just for safety, although that is a part of it, but to see what all I can see. Especially when walking outside, the more you pay attention to your surroundings the more interesting things you will see and the safer you will be.
When I took the garbage out to the dumpster, as I was walking along my driveway, I happened to look down and saw a small white stone that looked like a skull. Of course I leaned over and picked it up. Dang, even up close it looked like a skull. Here is a picture of it:

I have no idea where it came from or why I hadn't seen it before. The only logical explanation is that it was an alien who couldn't find his way back to his flying saucer and his buddies left without him. OK, you don't like that explanation? Then you tell me what it is and where it came from. Now, have a happy day and keep aware of what all is around you, you hear?

Vultures
I just went outside and happened to look up and the sky was filled with vultures. Well now, that brings up a question. What is the difference between vultures and buzzards? Well, I believe that vultures are very large birds that clean up all the dead things laying around. Their official name is Turkey Vulture.
So, what is a Buzzard? The word "buzzard" comes from the "buteo" which is the genus name for several species of fairly large raptors of the type of bird that we here in the U.S. call hawks. BTW, I had to look this information up to make sure that I was correct.
After I spotted all those large birds, I ran into the house to get my camera and ran back out and the sky was clear. I have no idea how they disappeared so fast. That was disappointing. I thought that I would have a picture of a sky full of Vultures to post for my readers, but I was wrong. . . sorry. I know I am getting old but I thought that those vultures would at least wait until I fell over. Now, watch out for Vultures and have a great day, you hear?

"Baby, it's cold outside".
I moved from the cold northern states to the sunny Gulf shore area of the great state of Texas. I am not located on the shore but it is within a couple or so hours drive from my place. We are far enough south to have fairly warm winters but not far enough to prevent some freezing. Here, near Conroe, Tx. the early morning lows for today and tomorrow will be in the mid 20's with highs in the mid to upper 40's. After that, it will get back up to normal temperatures for this area.
I am still sitting here in my rocker/recliner with my zip up sweatshirt on backwards. Why backwards? Well, sitting in this fabric covered high back chair, my back stays quite warm but the front of me can get cold, so why not wear the sweatshirt backward. That way, it completely covers my front and I can still put my arms in the sleeves. Don't laugh, it works for me except when I get up, it looks like I am walking backwards with my head completely turned around 180 degrees from normal. Oh, you say that is normal for me??? Now, stay warm and have a great day, you hear?

Multiple Close Encounters.
From what I read on the internet, there will be three asteroids whizzing past Earth between the Earth and the Moon tomorrow. If the astronomers' calculations are correct, they will not hit the Earth. That is the good news. The bad news is that next time we might not be so lucky. There are many, many more hunks of rock floating around up there. Actually, most of them are in orbit around the Sun. They are left over from the formation of the planets. So, this is not a once in a million years encounter but there will be lots more of them in the future. There were lots of them pass by in the past but most were before we had the capability of spotting them. You do remember that the dinosaurs were wiped out by a large asteroid smashing into the Earth, don't you?
Nice and cool here today. It is only 51 degrees here at 3:00 pm. Actually, it is refreshing and I love it. Now, you all have a great day, you hear?

Little Tree, Big Leaves.
Out in the dogs' fenced in backyard, there have been a few new trees sprouting up. The reason is that I have not mowed or cut anything out there for quite some time. A couple of them have some large, unusual leaves. The unusual part is that not all the leaves are shaped the same. You know, like you know that all the leaves from an oak tree look very similar, just as maple leaves all look the same. So, these leaves on this plant decided to be different, I guess. The leaves are not small. I would estimate that some of them reach 7 or 8 inches long. And, before you ask, yes I did take two pictures of them and here they are:
As you can see from the above pictures, the ones out on the end have a smoother shape and the further back the stem you go the more scalloped the shapes become. Some of the leaves resemble grape leaves. If any of you have any idea what it is, please let me know.
Another unusual thing was that when I was leaving the dogs out, I saw a huge white dog on my deck next to my screened in porch. It was all white and huge. Seemed very mild mannered. I believe that it was a Great Pyrenees. It looked at me, turned, and slowly walked away. It sure was a beautiful dog and I wonder where it lives. Now, you all have a great day, you hear?

Mist, Web, & Mystery
It was, and still is, a beautiful morning here at the Swamp. There was a mist that burned off quite fast as soon as the sun got up high enough to hit it. This first picture is what is left of the mist. It was taken from my back porch looking down toward my son's place and the chicken coops. I thought it looked quite nice but a little spooky:
I also noticed a beautiful spider web in the corner of the rear door of my screened in porch. The morning sun was hitting it just right, so I had to get a picture of that spider's handiwork. I wonder if she knit it or crocheted it?
Then I took the bird feeders out. I put the humming bird feeder up first then the suet and last the big bird feeder full of wild bird seed. They sure do like the buffet I set out for them, as do the squirrels.
As I was hanging up the big feeder, I looked down and noticed a perfect circle on the ground. It was about four or so inches in diameter and about two inches deep. Now, that is a mystery. What on earth could make that impression? Here is a picture of it:
Now tell me, what do you think made that mark. The bird feeders are located in the middle of the dog's fenced in area and that mark was near the bird feeders. There is no creature that I know of that would make a perfectly round hole like that. Have you ever seen anything like that? Now, you all have a great day, you hear?

The Peanut Tree
Back quite a few years ago, when I was manager of engineering at a local forging plant, a young fellow from the Pittsburgh plant came down to observe and learn and supposedly to take back suggestion for improvement. One day I was eating a few peanuts and he asked where I got them because he wanted to get some to eat, too. I told him that I raised them on my place.
That really peaked his interest and he asked me if I had a peanut tree and wondered if he could go to my place and see it, since he had never seen a peanut tree. After I and few others in the office got through laughing, I explained to him that they grow under ground. I also told him that they were legumes and were in the same family as peas.
Reading Hermit Jim's blog posting (http://hermitjim.blogspot.com), gave me the inspiration to write about growing peanuts. I think when we were young, we all had peanut butter and jam (or whatever you put on the sandwich to go with the peanut butter). I ate peanut butter and sweet pickle sandwiches. That was my favorite.
Now, after finding out how bad peanuts are for us, I eat almond butter and cashew butter instead. They are really yummy. And yes, they are more expensive, too, so have cut way back on eating them. Thanks Mr. Hermit for giving me a subject for my blog tonight. Now, have a P&J sandwich and have a great evening, you hear?

Rain, Rain, Go Away.
Boy oh boy has it been raining. I need to put water wings on the dogs when they go out. Oh yes, does any of you have Noah's telephone number? I need to put it on speed dial. I may have to order an ark. I didn't do anything nor did I go any where today and it was a good day for not doing those things.
Maybe I need to pay the electric bill so the sun will be turned back on tomorrow, What do you think? I really don't have anything to say tonight so will just bid you ado. Now, you have a great evening, you hear?

Crazy Rabbits.
Twice today, I have seen wild rabbits acting strangely. The first time, I opened the sliding glass doors that open up to a screened in porch. I have tied open the screen door so I don't have to go the whole way out when letting the pups out. A rabbit had come up the steps and was starting into the porch. I froze and starting talking softly to the rabbit. It sat there for awhile and then turned, went down the steps, and went over to the bird feeder and starting eating the bird feed that was on the ground.
A couple of hours after that, I went out the back door, and low and behold, there were a couple of rabbits on the steps out there. They seemed to look surprised and ran off into the brush and disappeared. To me, seeing this rare event happen twice in one day, was very special. I have lived here for many years and have never seen that happen before. Of course, at my age, my memory isn't all that good (grin). Just always keep your eyes open and you may be surprised what all you may see. Now, you all have a great day, you hear?

How Did You Get Your Name?
Your name isn't something that you chose yourself. Someone had to give you that name and that someone usually had a reason. Usually, it was your parents who gave you your name. They could have named you after someone in the family, or a family friend, or just a name that they liked. Do you know why they named you as they did? If so, let us know.
I was named after family members. My Dad's first name was Richard, so I was named after my Dad. His nickname was Dick, so that is also my nickname. I got my middle name from one of my Mom's brothers. His name was Milton so my middle name was Milton. Now, my uncle's nickname was Bub, so my middle nickname became Bub. So, I was called Richard Milton or Dicky Bub. Got that? BTW, my Dad did not have a middle name, just an initial. He was Richard J. and that gave him a lot of trouble, especially in the army.
Now, I had two boys. The first one was named after me and my wife's dad. We named him Richard John, now there were two R.J.s in our family. Then along came another son and he was named Rodney James. The Rodney came from an old friend and the James came from wanting him to be another R.J. Then there were three R.J.s in the family. Are you confused yet?
Now, our son broke the chain by naming his son (my grandson) Jimmy and now Jimmy has a son and named him Lane. Actually, it is good to have broken the chain of RJs. Now tell us who you were named after or, if you know, why you were given the name you have, and please have a great day, you hear?

Nothing New to Report.
Nothing new or unusual happening here. Everything has been quiet and the last few days has been damp with drizzling rain. Today, is not that much brighter but there is no rain. So, we decided to go to Wal-Mart to get supplies. That included something very import, my Blue Bell chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. If we would have waited one more day, I would have run out of that ice cream and then what on earth would I do??!!??
Now I am home, sitting in my rocker/recliner and rocking and rocking and feeling quite satisfied that I have enough of my favorite ice cream to last a few more days and also a fresh supply of food. Just in case you couldn't guess, I just love to eat!!! Now, it is mid afternoon, so let me finish up this posting and go look for something to nibble on. You all have a great day, you hear?

Dumb Questions and Answers
I found some questions on the internet that I thought were interesting and deserved some answers. I will try my best to answer them but I also want to hear what your answers would.
Here is the first one:
If a mirror reverses right and left, why doesn't it reverse up and down?
Now that is a good question. Even if you turn the mirror on its side it still shows that up is still up, not to the side. I don't have an answer for that. Help me out here.
How do you write zero in Roman numerals?
You can't. The Romans didn't have a concept of nothingness, that is until later in history.
Do you realize how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?
No I can't. That depends on how many people and how many holes they could dig.
Why do we call them hot water heaters when they heat cold water to make it hot?
You know, it seems to me it would make more sense to call them cold water heaters.
Why do wise guy and wise man mean entirely different things?
You mean they don't mean the same thing? Dang, now I am mad at all the times I have been called a wise guy. . .
Why does Tarzan always look clean shaven?
Maybe he wasn't old enough to shave. Good question, now I will wonder about that.
You can't have everything. Where would you put it?
I could find a place. . . or maybe not. I know of no place to place everything except in space (grin). Outer space, I mean.
OK, I am waiting to see your answers. Now, you all have a great day, you hear?

Watching TV
Almost everyone I know watches TV. Some watch a lot and some watch only a few programs, usually the news. I have to admit that I watch a lot of TV. So I have a question for all of you. What programs do you always watch and which are your favorites.
I will start out by saying I prefer all the old shows, you know, the ones that are only in black and white. Right now, at this time, I am watching Perry Mason. I also watch all the old western shows, like The Lawman, the black and white versions of Gunsmoke, etc. Then there are shows like Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Twilight Zone, etc. Some of them are on too late (or should I say, too early in the morning) for me, so we record them and watch them whenever we want to. I guess I like the shows that I used to watch years ago. And yes, that was a long time ago. In fact, I can remember getting our first TV. Since I was sick and couldn't get out to play, I guess my Dad felt sorry for me at the time. And yes, the TV networks were not on all night. They would show a test pattern instead of show. OK, I guess I am giving my age away again. I miss the good ole days. . . Now, you all turn that boob tube off and read my blog, you hear?

Not a Restful Night.
I didn't have a restful night's sleep last night. The first interruption to my sleep occurred just before one o'clock in the very early morning. I heard something that made a chill run up and down my spine, my hair stand on end, and my eyes opened up very wide. What was the sound I heard? It was a scream. No, not someone screaming but the scream of a very large cat. Yep, our mountain lion is still hanging around my place. The sound came from the southwest corner of my property. I decided to wake my wife and tell her that if she gets up before me in the morning, not to let the dogs out without me being there.
That happened about one o'clock, as I said above. Then around three o'clock this same morning, she woke me up saying she just heard it scream and it was to the east, close to where our son and daughter-in-law lives and has all those chickens, rabbits, ducks, and goats. It is not all that bad to have a little extra excitement in our lives. It keeps my old heart a pumping and my old lungs a breathing. Now, I hope you (and I) have a quiet and peaceful day, you hear?

What Are They Smelling? And small mushrooms.
When I took my two dogs out last night before I went to bed, the youngest one put her head up in the air and sniffed and sniffed and sniffed and then she turned around and ran back up the stairs and into the house. I wonder what she smelled? And then she did the same thing this morning. So, I bet that mountain lion is still hanging around, just out of sight. With the trees and brush all around my place, it wouldn't have to be more than a few yards away from the dogs' fence, which is my backyard fence.
When I was out in the back yard, I noticed tiny little red mushrooms. I thought that they looked really neat, so I went back in the house and retrieved my camera and took a few pictures. I placed a dime on the ground to give you a comparison of their size.
And another picture taken near ground level:
That is all for today. Now, you all have a great day, you hear?

Here Kitty Kitty Kitty
My son has game cameras set up several places on our property. He gets some fascinating picture from these cameras from all kinds of dogs, foxes, etc., but one picture made me take a second look. He posted the picture on Facebook but I decided to copy it from his Facebook page and post it here, also:
I don't care what you think it is, I believe that it is awesome. BTW, did you know that this type cat, according to the Guinness book of world records has the highest number of names being used for the same animal. These names are mountain lion, puma, cougar, painter, mountain cat, catamount, etc., etc. It has a very wide range, from the Canadian Yukon to the South American Andes. . . and I guess to my back yard!!
They can get quite large, typically weigh in at 70 to 150 pounds and be up to more than eight feet long. It has a bite force of 350 pounds per square inch, enough to break the skulls of wolves and horses and, I suppose, anything else it decides to kill. I don't think that I want one to get mad at me or see me as meal or a midnight snack. I definitely want to go out with my two pups at night. I doubt if I could fight one off, but my screams might scare him (or her) off. I don't think that I would scream, but just to be on the safe side, tonight I will go out with my pups and carry a firearm. Of course, I shouldn't worry, my ugly face should scare any big cat away. Now, sleep tight and don't let thebed bugs big cats bite, you hear?

Diamonds in the Grass.
I went out this morning. Everything was wet after last evening's rain. I found a patch of tall grass at the side of my driveway that had drops of water on the ends of the grass. Those drops shone like diamonds and I tried to get a picture of what I had seen. The camera didn't do it justice but you can see some of the drops:
Like I said above, the picture doesn't show it like it was in real life. Click on the picture and maybe it will enlarge for you. I really thought Mother Nature had done that just for me to take a picture and show you all. Now, have a great day, you hear?

Good Morning Glory
This morning I took a walk out the driveway. . . Well, actually, I was taking three bags of household garbage out to our dumpster that we share with my son's family. On the way I saw some wild morning glory vines that were blooming. Now I am a little confused. The ones I took a picture of looked to be on the pink side where as the picture shows them to be blue. Why would that be?
Anyway, here are the two pictures I took, one a little ways away and one up close.
Nature sure has a way of brightening up my world. Seeing those this morning started my day of right. I sure do enjoy all the wild things that grow and live on my property. I feel like I am the luckiest guy in the world. I always try to observe and enjoy the beauty that nature comes up with. Sometimes it can also give us bad things, but I try to see the beauty in all things, even the lightning storms. Now you all enjoy the beauty around you and have a great day, you hear.

New Light.
I bought myself a new hand held light the other day. It is quite versatile. First of all, you can hold it like a flashlight or hold it like a lantern by the attached handle. It has a powerful beam. I pointed it at a lot of the trees on my place and it sure did light them up, even the ones two and three hundred yards away. Yep, I have that mush space on my place. In the picture below, you can see that it isn't very large:
This next picture is looking into the front of it. You can see the reflector but just look at how tiny that little bulb is!! I wouldn't expect it to be able to the job, but it does.
And guess what powers this mighty little light? Yep, just three double A batteries. These fit at the rear under the screw off end.
I think that it will get a lot of use. I think I finally found a light that will do all that I want it to do except write this blog and I had to do that (grin). Now that I tried to light up your lives with this posting, I want you all to have a great day, you hear?

Oumuamua
Going to try this again. Last night I tried to post a blog but when I hit the button to post, it just went away. I just gave up and went to bed. So, I am going to try to write another blog posting, hope it works.
Today's blog is about Oumuamua. Have you ever heard about Oumuamua? No, it ain't a person, or a city, or a place, or a lake. So, what the heck is it? I will give you a hint. In the Hawaiian language it means “messenger from afar arriving first”. No, it isn't the mailman, it is a cigar-shaped asteroid about the size of a skyscraper. Here is a picture of it:

I am not sure, but I believe these are artists renditions of what it should look like. Astronomers have been keeping an eye on it because it has swung through our solar system before and it may very well do it again. Last time it didn't hit any planets, let's hope the next time, if it comes back, it will keep on missing the planets. Here is a map of its trajectory:
Space is a dangerous place and quite dynamic. We never know what it will throw at us but if there is something coming and we can detect it far enough out, maybe we could be able to deflect it enough to miss us and our neighbor planets.
OK, even though it is raining here right now, I am going to have a great day and I want you to have a great day, too.
