Wondering about your dog's favorite food.

First, before I go any further, I want to insist that if you haven't yet, you need to go read Hermit Jim's post that he put on for today.  Here is a link to his site:

Now, what is your pets favorite food?  We have three dogs so I will have to discuss dogs only, but feel free to tell about all your different pets; for instance, what is your pet vulture's favorite food. . . .  My wife cooks for our dogs.  She starts out with ground turkey and then adds different vegetables and some pasta.  I go beg with the dogs but they always win out (grin).  I guess they are cuter than I am.

Now, you would think that all that good food would satisfy them.  I only had one dog that would refuse food after she was full.  These three would eat until they burst and then eat what spilled out (oh so gross, sorry about that).  The oldest female just loves lettuce.  Yes, you heard me, lettuce.  We eat a lot of salads here and when my wife is preparing the lettuce, my one dog goes berserk begging for some.  Of course my wife gives her some and, to be fair, gives some to the other two, also.  The other two are not as enthusiastic as Muffin, but they will carry it off somewhere to chew on it while Muffin is chomping hers down and begging for more, more, more. . .  Therefore, I guess my oldest dog's favorite food is . . . ANYTHING, especially if it is lettuce.  Now, think about my Muffin next time you are eating your salad and have a great day, you hear?

  1. I have only had one dog in my life and I would share my hamburger with him...he ate everything but the lettuce.

  2. Had a cat one time, would sit at the table (but never bothered anything) when we ate and would eat anything handed to him...Tomatoes, pickles, etc. Smartest one I ever had, and he was 3 when he quit eating, took him to the vet, found a lump, was spread all over, put him to sleep. That very same day, his kitten was born, just like him.

  3. Bill had a dog when I met him... the best dog I ever met in my life. I'm not sure what he ate... BUT... he DID NOT eat our baby chicks! He DID NOT eat anything that Bill told him not to... even if Bill put a chunk of meat or something right on the top of his nose... he'd sit there and look (rather mournfully) right down his nose at that morsel until Bill said it was okay. If Bill picked up his rifle, Bear was really excited... just knew Bill would get him a groundhog. (darned things raided our garden... had to be exterminated). My dog, Sandy, loved going berry picking with me... but he'd eat all the berries that were hanging close to the ground. We haven't had a dog for at least 20 years now... so... what the heck do I know about dog food these days?

  4. MsB, mine would probably go after the lettuce first but would wolf down it all.

Trouble, All animals are smarter than most of us give them credit for. That cat was special. Did the kitten when it got big do the same thing at the table?

The Odd Essay, I used to have a Boxer that would not eat until I told her to. One day I forgot and came back about 20 minutes later and she never touched the food but there was a big puddle of drool on the floor. . .

  6. My 18 year old blind dog will eat anything that doesn't eat her first! But I would have to chop it up for her, as her previous caretakers didn't take care of her, and she only has four teeth now.

But I am very careful about what she eats, and only feed her organic food, and she likes a little bit of everything that I eat, too. (Except onions, raisins and grapes, of course, which are poisonous for dogs.)

  7. My Patches will eat anything and does. I have to watch her close when we go for our walks but she still finds 'stuff' on the ground and eats it before I see what she is doing. If she is off leash I have no idea what she may be getting into unless she brings it back to share with me.
Her regular meals are Canidae Pure Element an all meat dog food. Very expensive but I tell her she never had it so good since she found me.
