Ho-Hum

Ho-Hum.  Yep, that is how I feel this morning.  It was very dark and cloudy and just now it started to rain and it is coming down fairly hard.  Clouds must be pretty thick, just lost the satellite signal for the TV.  I pulled up the weather radar for our area on the internet and we are in the middle of a lot of red and yellow on the map.  Yep, that means fairly heavy rain.  And oh yes, just heard a loud clap of thunder.

Why is it that rainy weather makes me feel sleepy?  Does it affect you that way, too.?

It is moving southeast and should be out of my area soon. It is always good to have some refreshing rains in the hot summertime.  I can remember when I first moved to this area quite a few years ago, that you could almost set your watch by the rain which came every day about noon or one in the afternoon.  Have a great day whether it is raining at your house or not, you hear?

Yesterday I Forgot Something.

Actually, I forget a lot of things, but I took a couple of pictures to put on my blog of the cooling units I purchased and I forgot to post them on yesterday's blog about those units.  So, I guess I will post one of them now:

It is called Arctic King and I must say that they do a good job.  Two of them take care of most of my home.

OK, how about some humor about being forgetful?  No, you said.  OK all those that said no, you can stop reading right now, for you others, here are some jokes:

Two old friends met by chance on the street. After chatting for some time, one said to the other, "I'm terribly sorry, but I've forgotten your name. You'll need to tell me." The other stared at him thoughtfully for a long time, then replied, "How soon do you need to know?" ********** Patient to friend: "I saw the doctor to day about my loss of memory." Friend: "What did he do?" Patient: "He made me pay him in advance." ********** What was it I said about forgetting things? In order to help jump-start the U.S. economy, the INS has announced that this year they will stop focusing on illegal aliens, and begin the deportation of retired people. It's predicted that this will not only help lower health care entitlement costs, but it turns out that retirees are much easier to catch. Plus, they rarely can remember how to get back home. OK, that is all for today.  Hey!!  Don't say "Gee, I hope so."   Now, you all have a great day, you hear?

Substitue for our AC unit.

It has been really hot.  Yep, in the triple digits.  Our whole house AC unit finally bit the dust.  We spent quite a bit of money trying to keep it going, but we just gave up.  So, what have we been doing during this triple digit heat wave?  Well, I will tell you.

We went up to Wal*Mart and bought one of those AC units that are on wheels and uses an exhaust hose to vent the heat out of the house.  It did such a good job we went back up to the store and bought another one.

There is a lot of open space in out home.  A large living room is open to the kitchen which is open to the dining area which is open to the family room.  There are four bedrooms and three full baths.  I guess you got the idea that there is a lot of volume especially with the vaulted ceilings.  To eliminate area, we closed off three of the bedrooms, one of bathrooms, and the utility room.  That still leaves a lot of volume but two of those roll around units along with ceiling fans, keep it comfortable in here.  There had been a window unit in the family room, but I moved it to the master bedroom.  All is well and I hope you all are staying cool and are having a great day.

Stuff You May Not Know

As I have said in the past, I am quite interested in astronomy and have several telescopes, the largest having a 16" dia. mirror and the scope is taller than I am.  Although I have seen many wonderous and strange things, I have really never seen a black hole.  One of the ways that a black hole is formed is when a huge star collapses.  Black holes suck in everything and anything within its gravitational field.  A black hole is made mostly from matter.

OK, we all know about black holes, right?  Well now the cosmologists and physicists are talking about "white holes", which are the opposite of black holes.  The black holes suck matter in but the white holes spit matter out.  Could it be the same matter that is sucked in by one is spit out by the other?  If so, how did it get from the one to the other?

Want to torment a scorpion?  Place a small amount of alcohol on it and it will make it go crazy and sting itself to death.

Did you ever hear someone say shoo fly to scare a fly away?  That will never work because flies are deaf.

A very few species of turtles can breathe through their butts.

For every human on Earth there are 1.6 million ants.  The total weight of all those ants, however, is about the same as all the humans.

There is only one country (Russia) between North Korea and Norway.  Eleven miles of North Korea borders Russia.

After reading this post you will not recognize that the
the brain doesn't recognize the second "the".

Tears caused by sadness, happiness, and onions look different under the microscope.

The expiration date on water bottles is for the bottle, not the water.

I could go on and on but I think this post is long enough, so have a great day, you hear?

African Dust

I am not unusual for liking to get unexpected gifts, especially from a far off country but I have just about had enough of the gift that Africa is sending us, a lot of its dust.  I know they predicted that it would blow into this part of Texas but I didn't think that it would block out all our blue sky.  There is not a cloud in the sky, so it should be blue but all that dang dust is blocking out all the blue.  Just in case you don't believe me, I took some pictures.  It looks a lot worse in person than the pictures show but at least they will give you an idea of what it is like:

The thicker, darker part of the dust seems to show up in these pictures as a bluish color, but in reality, they are a darker grey than the thinner ones are.

When I went out to go to the corner Dollar Store and Post Office, I discovered that my right rear window was down and it wouldn't go up.  All the windows are crank-less and operate from buttons on the center console between the front seats.  I could hear the motor working but the window didn't come up at all.  So. . . I went to the nearest auto repair shop and he said he had to order parts and to go home and he would call when they came in.  He figured it would take three or four hours.  So, here I am, writing this blog posting and waiting for his call.  It will not be soon.  Now, you all have a great day and let me know if you have any African dust problems at your place.

Just Sitting and Aging.

I will make this posting even though I really have nothing to say.  Like I said in the post title, I am just sitting here aging.  My mother used to say that "getting old ain't for sissies".  Boy was she right, although I feel rather well but don't have any get up and go.  I am so old that all the hair on my legs migrated to my stomach. . . and all my hair has turned a snowy white (grin).

OK, maybe this is a good time to post some old age jokes, so:

Q: Is it a common problem for 60+ year olds to have trouble with memory storage?
A: No. Memory storage is not the problem. Memory retrieval is.

I grew a beard thinking it would say "Distinguished Gentleman." Instead, turns out it says, "Senior Discount, Please!"

Aging gracefully is like the nice way of saying you're slowly looking worse.

Regular naps prevent old age, especially if you take them while driving. *********************** OK, I hope you got a chuckle out of those jokes that I found on the internet.  I guess when you get right down to it, getting old is better than the alternative.  Now, you all have a great day and live every day to its fullest, you hear?

It Has Been Awhile. . .

It has been awhile since I have posted and yep, I am still alive and kicking.  I didn't die, but my computer did.  The computer people couldn't get it to work so they had to wipe my hard-drive clean, so I lost a lot of my pictures and information that I had stored in it.  Oh well, I decided to post and let you know that all is now OK. . . or let me say, I hope all is OK.  So far, so good.

OK, now back to posting my blog.  I noticed some mushrooms or fungi growing along my driveway and thought it was worth taking a few pictures of them, which I did.  So, I will post those pictures on this blog.

This double mushroom is growing on the same stalk:

Same mushroom, different angle:

And a close-up taken from ground level:

Those of you who have followed my blog postings for quite awhile, will know that I have always been interested in mushrooms.

Thanks for stopping by today to check out my posting and have a great day, you hear?
