When I was a kid, I remember my parents subscribed to the National Geographic magazine. They never threw an issue away. I spent a lot of time looking through those magazines and after my Dad passed away and my Mom decided to sell the house and move into an apartment because the house and land were too much for her to take care of, I got all those National Geographics. I again spent many an hour looking through those wonderful magazines. Then they went to a neighbor who was a retired colonel and just loved to read things like that. The last I saw them, they were in a wheelbarrow heading away to the neighbor's house. I will leave you with a picture of the 125th year anniversary issue. Now have a great day, you hear?

Wondering About a Great Magazine.

They were the first i picked up when waiting somewhere. Loved em too. Also Reader's Digest.

DeleteI subscribed to the National Geographic for many years until they started filling the magazine with advertisements. That was also about the time that they changed their focus from the magazine to TV. I still enjoy glancing at one when I find it but don't read from cover to cover like I once did.

DeleteI subscribed to it for many years. We even planned some vacations to see some of the things in the articles. Years ago there was an article about building the New River Bridge in WVA.... we took the kids down to see it being built. Another time there was an article about a boat builder (the tall ships) in Nova Scotia. We took the magazine with us and had him autograph the page with his picture. Another time was that article about the monarchs migrating to Mexico for the winter... inspired me to go visit that site. I was always more interested in the North American articles than the African or places (I thought) I'd never see. Now, about the only time I look at one is in a doctor's office or the like....
ReplyDeleteThat is great that you got to see some of things that were in the magazine in person. I was out hunting one fall day and as the sun was setting, thousands of monarch butterflies landed in a couple of trees near where I was sitting. What a magnificent sight it was!!
DeleteI always loved the magazine, but the ads really throw me off now. And sometimes an entire magazine issue will have nothing to interest me. I quit subscribing, but I miss it. I do watch the Nat Geo channel on TV once in a while.

DeleteI remember one summer, mid 70's, the wife and I headed off to Mexico for two weeks. Went down through Mexico City, Tosco and on down to the west coast of Mexico, Acapulco. Had some great adventures there. As soon as we got back the NG arrived with practically the whole mag covering the Yucatan and Incan cities. We could have gone there. We were right there.

DeleteMy parents subscribed to it. The very poor villages in Africa and other regions of the world were hard to forget and a stark contrast to the way we lived in the US.
