Wondering about superstition.

Are you superstitious?  I am not sure if I am or not.  I always said that I wasn't but somewhere deep down inside, I am sure that there is at least a very small shred of it clinging on.  Go to this list:

Now, look at number 13.  What it means to me is that the more intelligent a person is the less superstitious that person is.  Of course it had to be listed as number 13 and that is very, very unlucky, right?

This picture was taken from that site and it looks like the perfect place to take a long walk at midnight on Halloween.  You all go there and I will meet you there. . .(a sly grin).

We are getting a lot of rain here.  Maybe for the first time in many years my whole swamp/pond area will get filled. . . and maybe not.  I will let you know about that, of course, after the rain stops and it dries out a little.

  1. I have my own bad luck, the rest of it I am usually the cause of. My grandparents had it all down pat: No wild bird in the house. No hat on the bed. No umbrella opened inside the house, etc. Superstition gives people a false sense of control over the elements.

    1. My Grandma had the same superstitions as yours did. My Mom would not allow Dad to go back to the house if we forgot something that we remembered after hitting the road. She said that was bad luck and we would have to make do without what ever it was we forgot.

  2. I tend to be superstitious at times, but never about black cats, walking under ladders, or especially my lucky number 13!

    1. I bet, if we admit it, we all have some superstition, even if it is a small one that just gives us an un-easy feeling.

  3. Sometimes I wonder how much being superstitious and being religious have in common..... I'm kinda hoping I go to church because of beliefs... not because I'm afraid not to.... Sure wish we folks here on earth had the answer to the hereafter.... the heck with black cats and ladders... I want to know what happens "when".

    1. I think there is a big difference in being religious and in being superstitious. But I have been wrong before.

    1. We had 3 inches of rain today and more to come tomorrow. Has to have added some water to it.

  5. Superstitious? Maybe.
Way back I would not on a Friday night walk into work & say "I didn't bring a dinner cause we're gonna get out of here early tonight!"
That would cause the helicopter higher power to break one of them and we'd be there until 4am Saturday morning getting it fixed.

If you didn't say anything we might get out early on a Friday night, happened often enough. But if you did say something all bets were off, I'd seen it go bad more than once on a Friday night.
    Is that superstitious?

    1. I guess it would be best to keep your mouth shut and your fingers crossed so that you can go home early on Fridays. We all have a few little superstitions that we know are true. . .

  6. I'm not superstitious any more but some of the things I use to believe in the past was:
Walking under ladders was bad luck
Putting salt on the floor outside your bedroom door to stop the devil coming in at night because the devil couldn't count.
Not allowing a child to stand on a table because it meant you would never have any money
Putting an umbrella up in the house was bad luck

I mean, don't they sound stupid now?

    1. Yes they do and I wonder what the origins of a lot of the superstitions are? That would be interesting to find out.

    2. Salt on the floor outside the bedroom to stop the devil. It was thought that evil would not cross a salt line. I don't understand the part about the devil couldn't count.

    3. Slugs and snails melt when they get in salt, so maybe the devil is part slug. . .and I never heard until today that the devil couldn't count.
