Wondering What All I Am Feeding.

I have posted several times before about putting out feed for the birds.  I started by hanging my feeders in trees, but the squirrels emptied them almost immediately.   So then I went to Wal-Mart and bought a bird feeder holder pole or what ever you call it.  But the squirrels were able to climb it and or jump to it from the trees.  So then I moved it to the center of the dogs' fenced in yard and used Vaseline smeared on the metal pole to keep the squirrels out.  That worked.  But, I also dumped bird-feed and sunflower seeds on the ground, both under the feeder and just outside the fence.  That way all the wildlife is happy and can get a free lunch.  It is nice to see the different types of wildlife that shows up.

This first picture is just outside the dogs' yard where I put the bird feed on the ground.  As you can see, a cardinal showed up but to its dismay, a rabbit had gotten to the food first.

Then, at the base of the bird feeder a crow and a squirrel decided to clean up what food they could find.  Actually, there were two squirrels that wanted a free lunch but they wouldn't pose together.

One more picture of the squirrel and the crow but this one shows part of the two bird feeders:

I believe that my wife and I enjoy the bird feeders as much or maybe more than the birds do.  Now, what I really need to do is make a list of all the visiting birds.  We have seen some that we have never seen in this area before.  Now, I hope you all are well fed and that you have a great day, you hear?

  1. You might be pleasantly surprised when you make your list of all that visits your feeders. Probably many more species than you think. Do you have pauraques in your part of Texas?

  2. When I lived in western PA, there were Night Hawks there which I mostly saw near or over the Allegheny River. I have never seen or heard any in this area. Did you have them in Ohio?

  3. Dizzy-since we moved to our farm, we kind of feel responsible for the wild critters that make a waystop here. They expect the water troughs filled, and feed here and there.

I know you are in Texas~do you have pyrrhuloxia's? They remind me so much of cardinals from my childhood.

    1. No, just cardinals. Next time I visit southwest Texas, I will keep my eyes open for them.

  4. I always put down a certain seed (safflower-sunflower?) under the feeder for the mourning doves. I looked out my widow one day and saw the seed was gone, and there was Mrs. Dove looking up at me, pleading for more seed. They were skittish though and would fly away when I went out to scatter the seed for them.

(I was sure you'd mention that today is Pi Day!)

    1. At my age, I usually don't keep track of the day. But I did just now hear it was on the news. We got doves here, too, and they like the bird seed.

  6. Are you close to Hi Island? There's a bird sanctuary there, with lots and lots of different birds,, my niece and family lived there at one time.

    1. About an hour or so away. Been there a few times but usually just run the beach and pick up buckets full of shells. Used to fish and swim there, but not for many years.

    1. Thank you and thank you for visiting my blog. The squirrel solution was thought up by my wife, but I can take credit for smearing it on the pole. . .
