Wondering What All Happened on this Date.

Well folks, I don't have any great ideas for a blog, so I will do what I always do when this happens. . . I look up what all happened on this day in history.  Actually, a lot happened but most is very boring, but I did find a few things I will list.  Let us go back to the American Civil War.  On this day in 1865 "Major Henry Wirz, the superintendent of a prison camp in Andersonville, Georgia, is hanged, becoming the only American Civil War soldier executed for war crimes".  This is a picture of the Major:

Here is a picture taken just seconds after the lever was pulled to the trap door that sent him to his reward:

Also on this date in 1951, direct-dial coast-to-coast telephone service began in the United States.  How did we ever survive without it?
Not too many years ago (1989) the German Citizens started to tear down the "The Wall".  We all knew it had to go, but it was just a matter of time and the gumption to do so.  This next picture is of the wall in the city:

And it stretched into the county side:

Well, that is just a few things that happened on this day in history.  Now, you make history, by making today the best day in history, you hear?

  2. Billl has a copy of a (very distant) cousin's letter who was a Confederate soldier.... in Kentucky.... he wrote the letter to his mother telling her he was going to be executed the next morning. He was so young... caught up in circumstances he probably didn't even understand nor support. Nevertheless..... he died the next day at the hands of a firing squad. I don't have on hand the exact date, but your blog today brought that to mind. But... for me... it's been a good day... despite we had the leftover spaghetti squash seafood casserole for dinner tonight. I will say that it was better tonight as leftovers than it was yesterday.

    1. It must have been for some other offence than war crimes. I am sure there are a lot of other reasons to be executed.

  3. It always amazes me how many people showed up for a hanging in movies. Coast to coast dialing boy we have come a long way since then but it sure was an accomplishment then.

    1. There seemed to be a lot showed up for the hanging in the picture. Do you remember the first portable phones (before cell phones)? Some where bag phones and the old flip phones were huge.

  4. From what I've read public executions have always brought out the crowds.

You sure that second wall picture is Germany? Looks a lot like desert to me....

    1. I guess entertainment was sparse back in those days so even hangings had to fill in as entertainment. . .

No, I am not sure, but I got it off the internet and it said it was the German wall. It sure does look like a desert, but what ever it is or where ever it is, that picture is of one huge and long wall.

    1. My son was stationed in Germany when the wall came down. He was in the self propelled artillery, something like tanks only much bigger.
