Wondering about wild grapes

Wandering and wondering about what I have found.

I have seen a few things in the woods at the RV park where I was staying near Greenville, PA that I didn’t know what they were.  Some I could probably find if I searched enough but this first “What is it?” is something that has stumped me and the local people that I have asked.  We found these strange pods on a path in the woods.  There were quite a few of them from small and yellow to larger green ones.  My wife is holding the two extremes in the next picture.  If anyone knows what they are, please let us know.   We are quite curious.

I was walking a stream bed and found this unique design on a rock.  It must be some kind of lichen or other growth, although it looks more like minerals.  I don’t know what it is, do you?  If so, let us know.
This picture shows a very small, but fancy, mushroom of some kind.  The leaves in the picture will give you an idea of how small it is.  I have never seen one of these, either.  So, what is it?

Now while we are on the subject of fungi, here is a picture of a beautiful one.  I am sure this is a very common species and I know I have seen them before.  Have you?
OK, this last one is very sad, for sure.  I didn’t know anything like this could ever happen.  Did you ever here the song that was about angels flying too close to the ground?  I thought that angels knew better than that and that they were immortal.  All my beliefs were dashed when I saw where this poor angel had crashed to the ground.  She must have been moving at a terrible fast speed.
If you can get over the crashed angel, you all have a nice day now, you hear?

PS, I am now in an RV park near Butler, PA.

  1. That all came about by the radiation from Japan. Get out of there while you still can! ;)

  2. Okay . . . interesting stuff you got here Dizzy. Don't have those pod things around here. Invasion of the pod people? (the original, not the remake) Looks like a type of rock lichen. As for the fungus among us, I tend to avoid them all and only eat immature puff balls, as they taste like mushrooms and none are poisonous.

Angels and bug zappers, a sad tale.

    Enjoy your travels.

  3. The 2 unknown pods are Martian seed pods. DO NOT let the hatch out!!! The remaining items are simply debris left from a Martian spaceman camp out. :-) Have fun and sleep well now that you know that all that stuff is.:-)

  4. David, I already got out ot there. We went south to the Butler area.

I lived in Pennsylvania for my first 36 years and hunted and played in the forests all over the western part of PA and have never seen pods like that.

Ben, I am worried now, I put those pods in the rear bottom compartment where it would be warm enough for them to hatch. Guess I better go check. If you don't hear from me again, you will know what happened. . .

  7. They are under developed pine cones most likely came from a juniper or blue spruce why the tree is shedding them that is the big question you might want to tell conservation if there was a really large number of them on the ground it might be a blight in the area that needs to be looked in to..

  8. Ricky, The little yellow one looked like they came off a pine, but there were no pines in the area that I remember, and the bigger ones looked quite different. Wish I was still in that area, I would go and look to see if there was a pine in the area. Hemlock were around but not near where these were found.
