Wondering about rednecks, flowers, and tent worms

Remember my blog about my Redneck Horn?  Well, last weekend when I was walking through the flea market I saw a lot of Rednecks, here is a picture of one of them:

I took a walk around my place the other day and saw that this year everything is growing, blooming, or fruiting.  I suppose a more normal year of rain right after a drought caused everything that survived the drought to try to become more proliferant.  A small patch of blooms:

After my walk around the place, I noticed that a tree right outside my backdoor and the dogs' yard was the only tree on the place infested with tent worms.

Sorry about the quality of the picture but I took it this morning and was looking east toward the rising sun, but you get the idea.  This is no special tree, just a Sweet Gum.  Got too many of those trees around here.  Of course if we didn't have those down in the south and the chestnut tree in the north, we couldn't show the youngens what a porcupine egg looks like, right?  OK, I got to try and finish up my paying job, so you all have a great day today and don't forget, if you enjoyed the full moon last night there will be another one this month, also.  They call that a blue moon.  You know the phrase, "once in a blue moon" don't you?  That is because it doesn't happen very often.

  1. We used to use a torch on a long pole to burn out those worms. Won't hurt the tree, burns fast.
That moon has been lighting up the nite thru my windows.

  2. I was always told to take a high pressure water nozzle or long stick and poke a hole in that web an some little wasp will get in there and kill those worms.

  3. I've always wondered what the name of those prickly things off my neighbors sweet gum tree was! Now I know!

Porcupine eggs! Never heard that one before, buddy!

  4. Trouble, I used to burn them, too. It has been wet enough around here his year so I could do that. The moon was really bright last night.

Jim, never heard of that but it makes sense. They don't build those big webs just for decoration. It would work to keep preditors out.

HJ, I just thought it would fit. I heard the ones off chestnut tress were called that and they look more like a porcupine skould look.
