Wondering about old cars and hot rods.

I just never get tired of seeing cars and trucks that are a little different than what you usually see going down the road now-a-days.  My wife and I took our usual trip down to the local flea market again yesterday and will go again later today.  As we were leaving we saw this car parked in the parking lot.  Just had to take a picture of it.  I hope you like it as much as I did:

I bet that is a blast to drive, not much weight and a big engine.  Kind of reminds me of my teenage years when they first started making hot-rods like these.  Do you remember the Walt Disney movie "The Shaggy Dog"?  It reminds of the car that was in that movie.

That movie hit the big screen back in 1959 when I turned 16 years old.  Maybe that is why I liked the hot rods.  But back then I was going on dates in a 1955 DeSoto.  Oh, I am not knocking that car, it was a good one.  After my Dad, a salesman for H.J. Heinz company, thought he had wore it out after a few hundred thousand miles let me have it.  It was not a hot rod but it had four wheels and would go down the road.  Never the less, I have good memories of "my first car".  OK, now you all have a great day and be careful going down the road, you hear?

  1. Dizzy, I had a 1941 DeSoto as a first car. Boy did it run.

  2. Nice machine. I'd rather look at them than actually own one. Does bring back a more innocent and fun time.

Didn't we grow up in the greatest era ever? Best cars and the best rock 'n roll music!

  4. My first was a '49 Chevy! Dad's old work car he sold me for $25!

I was King of the road from then on! Wasn't pretty, but it ran!

I still want a hot rod, even at my age!

  5. Papoojack, I bet you blazed up and down the roads in that. Don't you wish you had it now. Like my '57 Chevy convertible that I sold for $450.00.

Trouble, It sure is a neat hot rod, for sure.

Sixbears, they are not too practical and most don't run on waste veggy oil. . .

Phylis, Yes we did!! The Korean war was the only blemish and then the start of the Vietnam conflict. But they were good times and good music, wish I could go back to that era.

HJ, Hot rods are built more for looks but they do go FAST. If you want to see something built for acceleration, go to the Top Fuel Drag Races. BTW, I like your new roomie. If you all want to see Hermit's new roomie go here: http://hermitjim.blogspot.com/

  6. My first car I bought from my grandmother for $400, a 1974 Pontiac Grand Prix. It had a big engine and it constantly ate mufflers. But it was my first car and it was awesome.

  8. That hot rod sure is pretty.

I still have my first car a 1972 Cutlass sitting in my garage with a flat tire and a dead battery. Hope to one day have the $$$ to be able to transport it to Del Rio and have it worked on.

  9. Jill, that was a nice car. Don't you wish you still had it?

Dr.rock, I will look at it. Thanks.

BsB, Wouldn't it be easier to have it fixed in Houston and drive it to Del Rio?

  10. No Dizzy it cost too much to have it fixed here in Houston and I really do not have a mechanic that I trust.

My Houston mechanic retired and sold his business about a decade ago. Last mechanic I took my other vehicle to here in town was a rip off.
