Wondering about Scary Movies.

I like scary movies, but they have to be plausible.  The more plausible they are the scarier they are because you realize that it could happen to you.  I decided to search the Internet and see what I could find.  I found a lot of lists but I am only going to use this one, http://www.infoplease.com/spot/halloweenmovies1.htm.  Here are the ones listed there:

The Silence of the Lambs (1961)

Psycho (1960)

The Exorcist (1973)

Alien (1979)

The Shining (1980)

Jacob's Ladder (1990)

The Mummy (1932) [ Not the 1999 remake]

Seven (1995)

Nosferatu (1922)

Here is a picture from Nosferatu:

Since I have only seen half of these, I can't say which are the scariest.  Psycho held me in suspense, but it didn't frighten me.  What makes a movie scary to me is one that keeps you wondering and then, Wham!!, it hits you with a surprise that almost knocks you off your seat.  That, is what I call a good scary movie.

I read that Nosferatu, which came out in 1922, had such remarkable animalistic makeup that hasn't been replicated since, even with all the modern technology.  OK, now you all tell me what movies scared you, if any.  I hope I didn't make you scared trying to remember movies that did scare you, but instead, have a great day, you hear?

  1. There was a movie about the making of the movie "Nosferatu." That was pretty spooky!

The movie "Wait until Dark" with Aubry Hepburn (about a blind lady) made me jump in a couple of places!

  2. I don't like sitting through movies and have seen very few of them in my life, although I did see Psycho and also Jaws. I found out if I close my eyes during the scary parts they aren't really very frightening. When I read scary books I tend to read through the scary parts very fast, or else I take a look at a page or two before the end to see who is still living. I don't read those pages, just scan for names. I don't like being scared.

    1. I haven't been to a movie theater for a long time but I do watch some movies on TV. I have DISH and get a lot of movie channels but I seem to watch the Western Channel the most. They have a lot of the old TV westerns that I remember from years ago.

  3. I saw the first 2... that must have been about the time I stopped going to the movies..... But I don't like scary movies... or war movies... or science fiction.... don't know why I like hard-boiled mystery books.

    1. If they haven't been on TV, I haven't seen them. I think the last movie that I went to see was the Space Cowboys. That was a good movie and funny. I like to laugh, it makes me feel good.

  4. "Poltergeist" was my idea of a scary movie, followed by "Tremors".
I remember when I was a kid having nightmares after watching "Ben Hur", the lepers were after me.
I saw it in the early 60's in Kailua, Oahu, Hawaii. The matinee line went around the building and it cost me a Benjamen Franklin half dollar to get in!

So Dick, did you see Nosferatu (1922) in the theater ?

  6. I think it depends on what scary means because I loathe horror movies especially if they have a supernatural element to it, but I loved the movie Seven with Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt which was absolutely brilliant. I like it when a film makes me have to think hard then all of a sudden and right to the end, the plot is revealed and you never saw it coming. Great stuff.

    1. Yep, they are some scarry movies. I love the old black and white cowboy shows. That was back when it was politically correct to shoot the bad guy instead of trying to reform him.
