Wondering about Tonto.

I was reading Hermit Jim's blog about the Lone Ranger.  That got me thinking about Tonto, his loyal Indian sidekick.  You remember Jay Silverheels don't you?  He was the Mohawk actor who played Tonto on the Lone Ranger show.  Remember that TV show?

And here is Tonto with the Lone Ranger:

But when I was a kid, I used to listen to the Lone Ranger on the radio.  That was before we had a TV, but I still listened to it after we got a TV.

Almost forgot to include Johnny Depp's portrayal of Tonto:

Then there was Straight Arrow.  That was also a radio show and Nabisco Shredded Wheat had the dividers in its box printed with all kinds of tips and information on Straight Arrow.  I used to collect them all.  Sure wish I still had that collection.  How many remember Straight Arrow?

He was a good Comanche Warrior and I loved to listen to all his exploits on radio.

Well, I guess I just gave my age away.  Probably most bloggers will not remember that radio show.   Let me know if any of you have listened to that show and know who Straight Arrow was.  Now, you all have a great day, you hear?

    1. You got that right, H.J., but I like to have my memory jogged so that I can remember fun times in that past, and I suppose the not so fun times, too.

  3. Talk about 'before their time', last summer I was working on a merry-go-round and sometimes I'd holler "Hi ho Silver!" as I'd push the start button (fun is where you find it ), talk about puzzled looks from the riders who had never heard of the "Lone Ranger" let alone seen it.
Everybody knew what "gittyup" & "yeha!" meant.

    1. We, the older generation, need to sit down around a campfire and remember the good old days, and believe me, they were the GOOD days.

  4. I don't recsll Straight Arrow but never missed the Lone Ranger on radio. Also Sky King of the Yukon, Gene Autry, the Cisco Kid, and a bunch more. I was so disappointed when TV came along because everyone looked so different that they had in my imagination!

    1. Howdy Doody with Buffalo Bob, yep, remember them well. We got our first TV about the same time you did. I was sick and bed ridden, so my Dad got us a TV to entertain me. I think I was just the excuse to get one (grin).

  6. We had one of those radios that was about 3' tall... I can remember trying to get behind it so I could see the people "talking". I don't know whatever happened to it... got replaced by a smaller transistor, I suspect. I listened to The Lone Ranger... Amos and Andy.... Fibber McGee and Molly and a bunch of others... but don't remember Straight Arrow.

    1. We had one of those big tall radios when I was a kid. In fact, I still have it stored in my shed. My wife listens to all those old shows on her satellite radio.

  7. For grins I looked up Jay Silverheels on IMDB. Interesting. He even guest starred on an episode of The Brady Bunch. LOL

  8. The trouble that some actors have is they get a great part that lasts for years and then everyone just thinks of him in that part and he doesn't seem to fit in other rolls. He made out OK.

William Conrad as Matt Dillon in Gunsmoke on radio vs James Arness on TV.
Although Conrad did make it on TV also as the detective Cannon or as "Fatman" McCabe in Jake and The Fatman.

    1. I heard that when Conrad tried out for the TV show he was sitting in the marshal's chair, he was suppose to jump up and draw his guns. When he jumped up, the chair came up with him stuck on his behind!! He didn't get the TV part.
