Wonering what is in our food and a phone call.

Have you ever wondered what is in the food we eat?  You know, the stuff that isn't listed in the "ingredients".  Well I have.  A lot of deadly stuff, like arsenic, is found in soil and then winds up in the food on our table.  I was reading an article in the magazine "Discover" about just that.  It had a list of "Secret Ingredients" that are among the most common found in our food supply.  I don't want to spoil your dinner, but here is that list (shortened a little):

Arsenic
Rice, apple juice, chicken, pet food.
 
Melamine
Baby formula, pet food,
 
Mercury
Seafood.
 
E. coli
Spinach, lettuce, sprouts, bologna, beef, hazelnuts, frozen cookie dough.
 
Salmonella
Cucumbers, sprouts, tomatoes, cantaloupe, chicken, peanut butter, wheat cereals, red and black pepper, and more.
 
Listeria
Cantaloupe ricotta cheese deli meats, soft cheeses, smoked fish.
 
Norovirus
Responsible for almost half of all reported food borne illnesses and is spread by human contact and tainted food and water.
 
 
This list kind of makes you hungry, doesn't it?  We have to be careful what we eat and how we prepare it.
 
 
Got a phone call last night form my cousin informing me that my Aunt (the one we send cards to) had a turn for the worse and is now in intensive care in the hospital.  I am not going to go into any detail, except it doesn't look good and the fix wouldn't be that good either.  But, I want all of you to have a wonderful day today, you hear?

  1. So sorry to hear about your aunt and hope things work out for the best.

    It is infuriating to me that I try to eat a healthy and mostly orgaic diet, but I can't do anything about how we've polluted the earth.

    When we had our farm we were "organic"... or as chemical free as we could be. But even then there were many things we didn't produce and had to make a real effort to control. These days? Well, we're not nearly as careful. I used to have a book (when I still had a bookshelf) that was about the nutrients and poisons in soil... just because you don't spray your veggies to keep them free of bugs or stuff doesn't mean that the soil they're grown in doesn't have some bad things. I think it said it takes 7 years to rehabilitate land to become "clean" again.

  3. I think you're right, Sharon... at least 7 years. I buy organic as much as possible.

    Sorry to read about your Aunt, Dizzy ... hope she bounces back... from whatever has got her down.

    It's not the amount in one item that will do us in ... it's the accumulation of the chemicals used in each item PLUS the air we breathe...

    wonder we're all still hanging around.... we're mutants!

    I think I'll just eat Fritos and nuttin' else and see how long I live; NOOO can't eat Fritos, NO TEETH !!! .FRITOS CRACKED'EM ALL !!!
    Then I'll quit readin' Dizzy & Feild Lab, cause they're alsways comin' up with all the things that KILL YA !!! Me & Ms B, are agonna eat nuttin' but Terlingua Chili and BB Chicken-foot/neck soup... YEEHA !

  5. Gypsy, It is the heavy metals in the dirt that is the hardest to get rid of. Of course all the pesticides, herbicides, etc. in the soil we should be well preserved.

    The Odd Essay, I am surprised that it only takes 7 years to rehabilitate the ground. Some of the stuff that is in it can be really bad. there used to be a nursery on part of the property I bought and the land where it used to be grows things better than the rest.

    Carolyn, I think you are right that we are mutants. Have to be to get as old as we are. . .

    Butterbean, Oh I envy you, I love Chili. Billy Bob can have the chicken-foot/neck soup.

    I guess I have never given much thought to what I eat or what is in the soil it is grown in. I figure with all the hot peppers I eat, it will kill all the bad stuff...or at least I hope it will :)

    1. The hotter the pepper the better, right? My problem is that I can't stand too hot of a pepper and my friend raises some of the hottest in the world and makes sauce out of them. Of course he tones it down some.

  8. Yep, its the veggies that will kill ya. We are much more likely to get sick from fresh veggies than cooked meat. Go figure.

  9. SS about your aunt, know how much you both will miss her if the worst happens.
    My son is improving a little every day, but still not all the way back yet. Off all breathing help, tho.
