Wondering if my vocabulary needs updated.

Does it seem to you that young people speak a different language than we do and that they have a completely different vocabulary?  The televised top fuel races where on TV last night but they didn't start until 10:00 pm and lasted three hours.  Since I am not the most handsome guy in the world, I need my "beauty" sleep and didn't want to stay up till after 01:00.  So I told my wife I was going to "tape" the event and watch it the next day.  Now let me tell you, I did record it but I have no way of "taping" it.  Does anybody still have and use a tape recorder?  Everything now-a-days is digital.  So to be "proper", I guess I "recorded" it instead of "taping" it.  The only meaning left for that word now is taping up a package with masking tape or Scotch tape or taping a gauze pad on a wound.  So taping is becoming an extinct word, just as people from our era our becoming extinct.

There are other extinct words or soon to be extinct words.  How long has it been since you have heard someone say, " Whoops-a-daisy"? Or called you "Kooky"  Or for that matter I wonder if the young folks of today know how much two bits is?  Or a "fin", or a "sawbuck", or a "C-note".  I guess the youth of today think the language that someone like me uses, or my grandpa used, is foreign to them.  Now, let me put this in a way you should understand, "you all have a great day today, you hear?"

  1. "Wondering" why my beauty sleep quit working?
My vcr is still tape, and worn out. Replacing it asap.

  2. Even if you taped the show you are a step ahead of me, because I don't have a recording device at all.

  3. I know exactly what you mean, buddy! I can still remember when the reel-to-reel tape recorders were the coolest thing around!

Funny how some words like "cool" seem to last forever! Showing our age here, Dizzy!

  4. What really gives me pause is that we have in storage everything from record players (yep! turn table and all) and many vinyl records, tape recorders, Kodak cameras (with flash attachments that require bulbs), floppy disks that have tax data on them ..... all manner of "electronic" equipment that no longer has any use and tapes and disks that no longer have anything to use them on. I guess it will give our kids and grandkids something to wonder about when they inherit all these relics.

  5. I have seen the relics and them be us.

  6. Trouble, mine quit many years ago. BTW, there is nothing wrong with a tape vcr.

Gypsy, You mean you don't share your singing with others?? My trouble is that I don't get to watch all the recorded stuff.

HJ, I show my age more than a little bit.

The Odd Essay, I thought that I would save it all on a CD, but now they are outdated. OK, what a bout a DVD? Things get outdated so fast anymore, there is no media that will be around a few years from now.

Jimkabob, maybe we should paint our mirrors black?

  7. Oh, you always make me think. Bad DD. BAD.

How about those old 45's with the hole in the middle you had to pop a piece of plastic in so they'd fit the spindle?

I was showing some of my art to two 10 year old kids last night. They are of the genius variety and made me feel foolish more than intelligent. But when I showed them the portraits of Andy Griffith and Buddy Ebsen, I then felt like I needed to be on another planet.

  8. Lotta joy, art is in the beholder or something like that. I put a lot of paintings on my blog a year or so ago and asked for criticism. Only got one real critic who did point out a lot of helpful things. The others just wanted to be nice and say how great they were. Post some of your paintings and let us criticize them. Sounds like a plan to me. .

  9. I have a TV/VCR combo but I can only tape shows from Mexico because they have not yet gone to digital HD like in the US.

  10. MsB, you can get a converter box. They sell them at Wal*Mart. They are not very expensive.

  11. Dizzy -
I bought a converter to change all my VHS to DVD, but have only tried once - too complicated. Had to get a youngster to read the directions then explain to me. And how about those state-of-the-art Polaroid cameras? Now you can't even buy film for them anymore! And language - how about ice-cube trays, lightning-bugs, snipe huntin'? Crinolines, ladies hankies, goin steady?Never hear of them anymore, either, do ya? Kinda like Bubba's cartoons - gone by the wayside...
    Ah, the good old days.....
