As I was watching "Marshal Dillon" (the older half hour version of Gunsmoke), I noticed Chester's Uncle drink coffee from a saucer. That got me remembering back when I was a kid. That seemed to be common practice for a way of cooling the coffee down enough to drink it right a way. I saw lots of people do that back in the 1950's or so. I guess it was considered to be proper etiquette at that time. I noticed lots of things on that old show that reminded me of some of the sayings around my area where I grew up in western Pennsylvania. I told you about some of them a few blogs ago. Got things to do, so you all have a great day, you hear, and sip coffee from your saucer if you want to.
DD, My grandfather used to saucer and blow his coffee. I think it was because they boiled their coffee and it was a lot hotter than our coffee makers are today.
ReplyDeleteI remember my dad drinking coffee from a saucer and I have probably done it mysef a time or two. I agree with papoojack - our coffee makers don't get the coffee quite as hot as it was in the "old days". Does anyone still use a saucer? I don't think I even have them.
ReplyDeletePapoojack, you got a point there, but I boil water, put grounds in a filter which is in a funnel type thing that sits on top of a cup. I then pour the boiling water over the grounds and it makes drip coffee.
ReplyDeleteGypsy, I think that it used to be acceptable practice. But like you say, who uses saucers anymore.
what's a saucer? lololol. I remember people doing that. As far as the westerns,,forget it,,
