Wondering about some more history.

My cousin, after seeing my last couple of blog postings on Phillipston, sent me some interesting information. Thanks Jim.

It seems that the house that my grandparents lived in for all of their married life was there at the beginning of the town. In fact, it was the first house!!!

Here, I will let you read it for yourselves and then I will comment on it:

Don't forget, you can click on it get an enlarged view.

Now, isn’t that interesting? My grandparents’ house was there long before the town and my grandpa bought it in 1918. Of course, it had been remodeled, and in the late 1940’s it even got an inside bathroom. I can remember that important event!!

I am not going to take the time this morning to search for a picture of the house from the same angle, but I have one handy that shows the house from the opposite corner. The picture in the above article shows the porch on the river side and the side of the house on the down river side.

This following picture that my Mother took shows the other porch that faces the street and the upriver side of the house. You will notice that the longer roof slope is on the side opposite the river.

The house is still in the family. The last I heard it was owned by my Grandma’s sister’s grandson. The last I saw it, he had made some drastic remodeling changes and even put in a swimming pool.

Hope I haven’t bored you with some of my family’s history. I will try to change the subject on tomorrow’s blog, at least for awhile.

  1. Not at all boring sir. Thanks for the research report and pictures. What is the tall metal thing on the platform in the yard? Is it for rainwater capture? or part of a still maybe?

  2. I don't see any tall metal thing. There are two lawn chairs in the yard. Click on the picture, and when it comes up, click again to enlarge it. Are the chairs what you are looking at?

  5. Ben, no problem, you can quit slapping your head now.

Frann, Did she see any ghosts? After my Dad died, my Mom sold the house and rented a place that had been a funeral home at one time. Small world, yes?

  6. Those wooden 'Beach Chairs' remind me of life in the old day before aluminum chairs covered with plastic.

Plastic had not been invented and all 'Beach Chairs' were made of wood and covered with cloth. They all looked alike too, must be there was only one style for the beach chair cloth!

I can almost smell the suntan lotion, and taste the balogna sandwiches my mother would bring in a cooler to the beach.

Hey, do you remember Zarex bug juice?

They're getting $10 for an empty Zarex jug on E-bay!

My father always bought it, sometimes it was orange and sometimes it was red.

  7. Ernest, those chairs were comfortable, too. And, no, I don't remember Zarex bug juice. Cool Aid was about the only drink I got as a kid, except for milk.

  10. I'm amazed, I must say. Rarely do I encounter a blog that's both
equally educative and amusing, and without a doubt, you've hit the nail on the head. The issue is an issue that too few men and women are speaking intelligently about. I'm very happy that I found this in my hunt for something concerning this.
